I am a noob to this craft and am excited to build my first still soon.
For design, I am thinking a hybrid pot/reflux still: basically a pot still with some passive reflux (in theory, at least).
It would be a 5 gallon pot with a stainless bowl sealed on. a 1 1/2" column, 3/4 inch lyne arm, and 3/8 worm.
To get some passive reflux, I would put some copper mesh packing in the column, position the lyne arm sloping back into the column, and place wet rags on the lyne arm to pre-condense the less volatile vapors.
I hope to start my 'stilling journey making moonshine (which is basically un-aged corn whiskey, right?) or light rum. Or what is the best spirit to start out with for a small still, low budget, and no experience?
And is my idea for the still design OK, or is it crazy?
Feedback is much appreciated.
Happy stilling!
