Good application for an air still?

Post by Metalking00 »

Hey guys,
Ill start off with saying that I have a boka that I'm happy with. Now that Im starting to get a bit of neutral stored up I want to try experimenting a bit with gin and some other botanical type liquors. I know that I could just use the still I have, but Id like to be able to do small batches (more experiments) and without setting everything up (I live in a house with 10 people...big house..., and I run my still in the bathroom so people can't tell when Im running it and to keep it out of everyone else's way. My girlfriend is patient, but its "her" bathroom). Id like a mini pot still, but then Id have to be in the shared kitchen, which isn't ideal either.

I was thinking that an air still could be a good solution to this problem. I can make my neutral with the boka, and since Ill have taken care of the cuts on the big main spirit run, I can use clean neutral macerated with botanicals in the air still. Im not planning on doing any "primary" distilling in it, so the small boiler size and corresponding difficulty with cuts won't be an issue. I have a controller for my boka that could be used for the air still to manage power input.

I know people here don't like air stills much, but this seems to be a good use for one? Having never used one, are there any downsides to this idea before I spend the money on one, or are air stills just not worth getting in any circumstance?
