Swish barrel is amazing
So I get barrels from a local distillery and use them for wood working projects. They smell amazing inside. The manager said I could swish them before use. He said to take about 7 to 10 liters of boiling hot water and dump it in and roll the barrel each day and let it rest in a new spot each time. This last barrel was dumped at the distillery and it had an 18 year old single malt in it and before that it was a once used bourbon barrel. I did what he said 3.5 weeks ago and just tested it today. I got 6.5 liters back out at 46% ABV and it is amazing. I went and bought a bottle of what was dumped to compare and its identical. For the price I get the barrels this method is cheaper than making my own. I suggest anyone try it if you have access to freshly dumped barrels.

Gotta say thats a bonus for sure . My guess is that the hot water cools and sucks the alc in the wood out . But man , thats a lot of alc . Wouldn’t have thought there would be so much in there . Nice catch
Wondering how big was the barrel and what will you do with it now ?

The barrels are 53 gallons. I just checked the SBV again at room temp and its 43%, still happy with it. It's not in Alberta, the other side actually in the maritimes.Yummyrum wrote: ↑Fri Mar 13, 2020 5:03 am Gotta say thats a bonus for sure . Jiggy's story is the same: he recovered about a gallon per (53/gal) barrel. This was bourbon, not single malt. If I remember correctly, Jiggy said after it was all said and done there were more than 75 gallons recovered.
barrel leftovers?

No wonder my rum has a hint of bourbon character in it!

Im gonna have to try this myself. I just got a barrel from my local distillery. They say it was emptied 2 weeks ago. Only one product has ever been in it. Apparently it was aged for 4 years. One bottle of the product that was aged in it cost roughly $40. So if i can get 6 liters of anything close to resembling that product, that would be amazing. I paid $75 for the barrel.850stealth wrote: ↑Wed Mar 11, 2020 2:23 pm So I get barrels from a local distillery and use them for wood working projects. They smell amazing inside. Nope, he is stealing from the devil. So that's OK!
Re: Swish barrel is amazing
It's known around here as "sweating" the barrels. The guy that first told me about it said to let it sit out in the sun (and roll it every day or two) so that's what I've always done. Not sure how much the sun matters. Other than that I do exactly what you do. Good stuff!
Plain ole pot rig.
