So I recently purchased a barrel from my "local" distillery. $75 for the barrel. They tell me it was just emptied 2 weeks ago and the barrel was only used for one batch which was aged for 4 years. From the look of the barrel and the information about it, I would say this wood has a lot of life left in it. I'll probably save the lids and use them as wall art or something. I'll probably cut up the barrel and use the oak for aging. Since most sellers charge about $10 per pound of toasted oak, I think this is a great deal. 100lbs of oak should last quite some time.
Anyhow, I read somewhere you could add a gallon of water to the barrel and possibly extract some leftover whisky, which was soaked into the wood (devils share, sort of). Anyone ever try this and was it worth it? I imagine it would be extremely oaked. I suppose it could be used as an oak extract and possibly make an instant aged whisky (no such thing, I know). Thoughts?

haha Dont get me wrong, It did cross my mind! but my production is very small. It would take me quite a while to get that thing filled. But once I step up my production, I will have to give it a try with another barrel. But for now, I may use the staves to age a small batch.

Extracting leftover spirit from a barrel by swishing is a trick from before I was born.
Try adding a compatible white dog to the barrel, waiting as long as you can, then drawing only off as much as you need before topping it up with at least the same volume of new make. If you think your later bottlings don't have enough oak character, add new toasted, charred, oak to the barrel.
