Hello from sunny Wellington NZ

Post by Nzgeordie »

Been thinking about giving this a try for quite a while. Due to retire so looking for a hobby to pass my time away.
I recently pulled the trigger on a T500 so looking forward to finding out what I can produce and to what quality.

I alway do lots of research and find forums such as this a mine of information.

So here I am, a complete novice who is looking to learn.

Kiaora from the top.
You'll need to start with a good mash, man.

Why throw out stuff you've already paid for?
Not expecting high end quality from the very first try. All about the learning curve!!

Because the "turbo" ingredients/yeast is almost sure to make bottom-end quality, whether first or hundredth try.

Use it for a cleaning run then. Or run it, then run a Wineos neutral and taste the difference between the two.

I was thinking along the same lines, thought the heading belonged in "The Liar's Bench" section!

Only joshing, welcome from across the ditch.

And +1 on ditching the turbo stuff, its expensive and not great. Get some sugar, some bakers yeast, some epsom salts and some mulitivitamin tablets and you're pretty much set to go IMO. Maybe some wheat bran (I heartily recommend Teddysad's Fast Fermenting Vodka or TFFV) (see above) I think he is from Kiwiland too.

Good luck with the distilling but I can't same the same about the rugby.....
Taking a break while I get a new still completed....

Welcome,

+1 on the ditching the turbo, or using it to make hand sanitiser. a TPW or TFFV are going to be far superior. but if you want to do a cleaning run or just practice go for gold.

Also check out Jessie from StillIt on Youtube, he has some very informative T500 vids, and "Next Step"options.

Thanks for the welcome. I do intend trying different things so no doubt will be visiting the relevant threads.

As for sunny Wellington….. currently experiencing 25/26deg with no wind.
Coming from the NE of England where temps get as high as 19deg 1 hour/per year, this is killing me. 8)
I’m used to 12/14 deg with the occasional 15 deg

Thank god for air con

But if you don’t try the bottom-end quality, how do you do a comparison?
It’s a learning curve that needs to be followed sometimes. Otherwise how do you know you are improving?

It came free with the kit. Use it, get the bottom bench mark and move on from there.
The fun will be in the experimentation.

You don’t jump on a 1300cc crotch rocket as soon as you pass your bike licence… you progress up through the stages and learn.

Wuss.

Also, what's a "license"?

Should be pretty clear from above what the consensus here is...turbo good for glass cleaner or fire starters. That's about it.
But hey, have at it. Many people here will have ridden that curve...you could take good advice... or find the line for yourself.

Best you stay there then, you wouldnt like it in this part of Au........high 30s today and 90% humidity.
On the upside the sugarcane loves it.

It not about going against concensus or ignoring advice. If I'm not prepared to take advice, I wouldn't even bothered coming on a forum.
However, I have the ingredients for a first run as part of the purchase of the still, so why not use it to learn the process. When I have to spend $ for ingredients going forward, that's when I look at the advice of the more informed.

Thanks for the welcome.

That's exactly what I intend to do. Use the free stuff (which is considered crap) and then compare with better ingredients for the next run. That way I will have the comparison.
Using the stuff from the purchase isn't going to cost me anything except some time and a little power. And gives me a bench mark.
It also allows me to go through the process of learning the method without further cost.
And if I don't get the method correct, it hasn't cost me more $

A wise plan .

Just be aware that the Turbo generally is done with 6-8 kg sugar compared to 4-5kg sugar used by most recipes here . If you go 8kg , you will get to experience the full foulness Turbo produces can provide but you still will run slightly different to when you run a wash with only 4kg sugar . Also as you can imagine , the yield will be less .

Otherwise , have fun
