Right loading/flooding level for a packed column

Post by TwoSheds »

Hey all, I'm trying to get my reflux runs just right and wanted to ask those with more experience if this looks like I'm at the right level of loading for my Raschig packed column. Sorry the images aren't the best quality, they're frames from a video.

The setup is a 3 gallon kettle, 4' of 2" column packed with Raschig rings, topped with copper scrubbie, sight glass, dephleg, out to condenser.

If I saw the level like this, bubbling over the copper occasionally, I left it alone or decreased dephleg cooling slightly if the takeoff rate seemed slow.

If the liquid was lower but still visible I left it alone.

If I couldn't see the liquid in the packing at all I increased power by 1% (Auber SSR controller) and waited, like 10 minutes, for it to come up.

If the liquid was higher than this in the sightglass, like splashing up to the dephleg, I decreased power by 1% and waited.

I confidently pulled 95%+ for the bulk of the run, and it seems pretty damned neutral, so no complaints on the results. The process was a bit fussy but I'm sure will get easier with practice.

Thanks in advance for any feedback and all the great info here that got me this far!
