Barrel size

Post by realtree71 »

Do you save up your whiskey or rum in glass until you can fill a larger oak barrel? I’ve found using smaller barrels can get the product hot due to surface area contact being way smaller.

Thoughts?

Gallon jugs work great with corks. Also corny kegs with seals replaced with ptfe.
Sanke kegs with spear removed a 2 inch cap and triclamp can seal it.

Can also oak the tpee way in kegs. Big cork will work in sanke keg also.

Define larger.
I like 5 gallon barrels, and find that 3 or 4 25 gallon ferments will fill one. I'll put the first runs in a corny keg and when I blend the final run I blend for the barrel and fill it.

If I'm only making single batches, I age it in gallon glass jugs with a cork stopper. I'm going to give a Badmo barrel a try on this current recipe. They're the perfect size for a single ferment run in my shed.
