residue left after plasma cutting my keg

Post by Husker »

Cut my keg yesterday after welding class. Have a nice edge now that I have ground it down, but what I have inside the sankey does not look great.

I got most of it out yesterday. It was almost rusty, but was stuck like glue all throughout the inside of the keg. I am 99% sure this is simply the metal fumes and spray from the plasma cutter. Now, most of the scaily nasty stuff is gone, but there is still a stain on the inside of the keg, which I just can not get off. I have not tried steel wool (yet), but was asking here if anyone who has seen the same as I am seeing had any better ideas as to cleaning?

Possibly, I simply need to run this on a first run with crap material, to clean it out I have about a gallon of 45% heads and tails, which I plan on running through on the maiden run of this still, along with 4 gallons of a turbo mash that got too hot, and tastes awful. I plan on running that material at least twice, prior to putting in anything I later plan to drink, just to clean out anything which I was not able to clean out with crotus paper and baking soda.

Now with the keg cut open, and (most) of my supplies in hand, I think I can get this baby done this week (well, I might wait till welding class next saturday to attach the bottom threaded fitting to my copper bowl). My welding instructor is more than happy to help, and to provide the sterling8 to attach those two parts together (for a liquid price of course ;) ) I would rather use an oxy-acc from the class shop, than the little crappy MAPP flame I have. I think the MAPP torch should get the Nixon head done pretty easily, but I would rather have a little more heat for something as large as the bowl and a female threaded fitting.
