Fermentation issue

Post by Cole_simm »

For some reason my mash is not fermenting. I’ve successfully made sugarshine and moonshine before but this is my first all grain mash. Any ideas on how to get the yeast working again would be appreciated.

My mash recipe is 8lbs cracked corn, 1.5lbs malted 2 row barley, and 5 tablespoons Red Star bakers yeast.

I heated water up to 165 deg F, then added the corn and stirred vigorously for 5min then stirred every few min until the water temp dropped to 150 deg F. At that point I added the Malt, stirred it in, and let the mash sit for 90min, stirring every 15min. I used a yeast starter with 1tbs yeast, 1tbs sugar, and 1/2 cup water at 110deg. Added it to the mash, water temp was around 90deg F, and it seemed to be working fine but when I woke up the air lock was not bubbling.

The following night I added 4 more table spoons of yeast to a starter and then to the mash, I also made sure to aerate the mash real good. Seemed to be working fine then the next morning stopped again.

I have the mash inside my house which is 70 deg F during the day and 61 deg F at night. I also wrapped the fermenter in my coat to help insulate.

I have never done an all grain mash before so I am worried that I didn’t cook it right. I confirmed the cooking procedure off of two different websites but I don’t know what went wrong. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks
