Too much wash

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

Too much wash

Post by EricTheRed »

Hi

I did a 3 x 45 L mash - each one consisting of 2kgs of rolled oats (breakfast type) and 7.5 KGs of sugar. Did the enzyme treatment on the oatmeal.
I was targeting a net low wines volume of 28 L for my 30L kettle.

However, i ended up with 35+ L

The plan was to reflux twice - but 35 does not go into 30 :(

So, the question - as i have about 10 litres of heads and tails, from potstill runs, that i was saving up for an all feints reflux
Should i split everything and do 2 x reflux runs - would be about 45 L in total, or 22.5 litres per reflux run,

As I was planning to double reflux anyway, then mix the results of the two above and do a final reflux?

the target is a high proof near as dammit neutral.

Running (for reflux), a CM setup, on top of a combined 1.8 m packed column (half 2", half 3") for reference

Just split your wash in half make 2 strip runs with it then decide if it's keeper stuff or add your faints and run it all as a spirit run.

I've already stripped it down to 36 litres of low wines

So, i have feints from spirit runs gone by (10L) and 36 Litres of low wines

So, reflux 18litres (with some water) x 2
or
reflux 23 litres (with some water) x 2

then - prelim cuts

then reflux the remaining as a single charge to get to do final cuts

What Northwoods said. Or, you could do a 1-1/2 run with 20 liters and take that high wines and add it to the remaining 15 liters for the final spirit run.

Yes. Keep your feints separate. Especially if they're AG.
AG feints in my limited experience made exceptional vodka.
Better than sugar was for sure.

I keep faints in a separate collection jug until I have enough for an all faints run.

I normally do. Was just asking if it makes any sense to add to a new neutral wash.

Don’t put your stinking leftovers into your nice clean wash or low wines.

Seems to me that some people claim to make great neutral from fients, others claim you shouldn't mix them with your nice clean wash.
....My opinion......Any half decent reflux still run properly should be able to sort the good from the bad regardless of how you do it......if it cant its not worth owning.
Try it and see what works for you.
