Metallurgical help: Is this Copper?

Post by n_plains_drifter »

Found this in my mom's garage, and if you ask me, it will make a perfect onion after a few additions. Question is, is it copper, or might it be brass or some other alloy that makes it better for the trash than the pot column. Think this is safe to use, and are there any tests I can do to confirm?

I'm sure the original design was as a planter. Made with at least 16 oz sheeting whatever it is. Original purchase label on the bottom says Made in India. If you look closely, you can see what appears to be hand hammered dimples. EDIT: Dimensions are about 11.5" wide at the max, 10" tall.

First image shows it in the oxidized state (absent the streaks from my cleaning attempt. Second image is the side I worked on with diluted Hydrochloric acid. Last image shows the bottom which I will make the top, perfect for a weldless triclamp fitting. All I need to do is get some more copper sheeting and solder to the big opening and add another weldless fitting.

Worth the effort?
