I’ve used bentonite off and on if something just won’t seem to settle or if I don’t feel like waiting. I’ve never noticed that it does anything to the flavor or color.
After that I’ll decant it off thru at least a fine screen to avoid introducing things like dust or the odd fruit fly that always seems to be looking for a free drink.
When I get to the muck at the bottom I’ll often shake it up and add it to some more that I’d like to settle and just keep repeating until I can’t seem to get any more. A few tsp of bentonite will handle quite a few gallon jugs. The final sludge can go back into a strip run for recycling.
