Under the carport

Post by Yummyrum »

This is where I do all my distilling . I’m on gas so I get ventilation .Close to my water tank . Easy to empty my fermeters and boiler . It’s a pig stye though .

Anyway , today I’m stripping a Shadys . Normally I use the Liebig ,today I got out the Shotty for a change .

Nice set up Yummy, is that an insulated lyne arm and if so does it serve much other purpose aside from getting the outlet away from the burner?

Thanks Sporacle ,

Yes primary purpose is keep the collection end from the flames

Not sure how much help the insulation does as far as stripping is concerned , but it keeps the heat in for sure .
I should probably insulate the rest , but I’m lazy and it works .

Well here I sit, pondering something smart to say on your wind management. And then the bloody mushtun overflow during recirculation. And in my haste I lost a slipon sandle?...... Yummy I find your wind management an excellent example of ingenious engenering.

I don't care if you distill in the porch, on the porch or under the damn porch, you alway have a way to provide sound advise and answers true to real life experience.

Yummy, I bet you a 100 ZAR if you through one thing away.... even if you did not use it in 30 years, you will need to buy it in a weeks time.

You have inspired me again Yummy. This time, it’s in the form of both engineering and cleaning up. I’m gonna make that damn shelve I’ve been needing, to help organize my barrels and jars. Let the games begin. Otis

All done now with the new shelves that sit on the counter. Getting rid of at least three full cases of jar experiments and older booze that is not up to my current standards helped make space. Now I can get back to work filling some of the empty barrels. :D.

Good luck with your car port Yummy. Otis

We’ve got 5 Acres . Bought a tractor a couple of years ago and starting to rip up some of the paddock into garden rows with an old chisel plough but just built this one to help . Won’t planting crops like barley . But you have me thinking .

I've seen a lot of black mold around moonshine still sites.
Don't know if commercial distillers have the problem or not.

Interesting Shady , I’ve always had a suspicion it may have been a thing . My thinking it was from the fermentations …. A yeasty thing maybe
:shifty:

The shed is full off it . Thats where I used to ferment .

I used to run outside in the back yard, in the middle of town, with blankets over fences and getting paranoid for the whole day. Then I moved things into the garage, and worry a good deal less. THEN my folks moved closer to me and the grand kids, landed on the other side of the state-line in Missouri, where its legal on a state level, also they're out in the country. So now I run outdoors again. Sure is nice when the weather is nice.

When its cold, the propane heat is pretty nice, the cooling water in my flake stand stays colder longer, but the process takes a bit longer.
When its hot, the propane heat isn't nice, the cooling water doesn't stay as cold as long, but the process takes a bit faster.

I built an outbuilding with two bays one with a 12’ high garage door. The doors face my house not the road so I do my distilling just inside the 12’ door and if it’s windy I park my truck sideways to the garage door and lower the door slightly so I don’t have a wind problem yet still have good ventilation. My main still is electric but my other smaller stills for gin and essential oils runs off propane.

Yes. Baudoinia compniacensis, AKA distillery mold. It's a fungus unique to bakeries and distilleries, you find it in any big barrel house or near the stills themselves.
