Lots of grains to try

Post by Bradster68 »

I'm on an island, so nothing here at all for my hobby. Went to the big city today and spent some cash.
Here's what I got.

55 lb of rye

55 lb 2 row

10 lb honey malt

5 lb smoked malt

10 lb biscuit malt

10 lb of red wheat malt

5 lb white wheat malt.

Because I read till my eyes bleed I dug back and found "Makers Mark" recipe. (Thanks Tater  ). That's what I'll be making next.
I'm always interested in hearing what everyone has to say about flavors or something they like about the malts I got .
Hope this is the right section to post in. 🍻

You'll have honey and biscuit malt for a while. Usually if I am buying a specialty malt to try I pick up a pound or two, I usually use 8-12 oz in a 11 gallon mash. Blend and sample the white to see if I like what it's bringing.

Looks like all your missing for bourbons and Canadian whisky is corn, got a feed store on your island?

I use proximity for a 90/10 rye and oat whiskey, its lovely.

I have a feed store 20 min up the road.so I usually get my corn there but Iv got a bag of "PAN" brand cornmeal. Some say it's very easy to use if you use it correctly and has good flavor.
So I'll be trying that first. Iv done SOCD's honey bourbon so I know you don't need much specialty malts. I didn't realize that little of an amount would be detectable. Im Very interested in the biscuit. I guess all I can do is play around and see what I get.
The rye oat whiskey sounds tasty.
I did a 50/50 barley rye a while back.
This is my favorite thing to do now in my free time.
Lots of options. 🍻

Thanks for the heads up.
