What tools do you use to measure volume?

Post by Steve Broady »

I suspect that pretty much everyone here makes more alcohol than I do in a single run. Even so, I’ve had a problem trying to measure the total volume that I’ve made after a run, so that I can accurately proof it down for aging. Surely everyone else already knows the answer, but I’m slow. What do you use which is large enough to measure your total volume and made entirely of alcohol safe materials? The largest glass measuring cup I own goes to 1/2 gallon. I’ve thought about scribing or stamping some volumetric markings into an inexpensive stainless pot. I even tried going by weight, but I overloaded my kitchen scale and don’t trust the bathroom scale to have fine enough resolution. So far, what I’ve done is to pull out 2 liter increments until I’m within the range of my scale, then weigh the rest and use an app on my phone to calculate volume based on proof, weight, and temperature. It’s a hassle, to say the least. There has to be a better way.
