Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Chalk might help, it's hard to say how much, add a little at a time and find out.
I'd go to a grocery store and buy some pickling lime.
If you haven't already added any Epsom salt, get some of that too.
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
I have epsom salt so i will add a pinch amd the chalk i will add. Do you recommend blitzing into a tornado again.

Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Chalk is calcium carbonate … thats the one …. but probably too late .
Gypsum is calcium sulfate …. Plaster of paris…definitely not the one .

Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
For reference, what was the pH when it stalled and and what did you raise it to with the calcium carbonate? I missed those details - which may be helpful for other folks that present with this scenario in the future.
Cheers!

I just ran into a similar problem. Temp to high and ph dropped horribly. Add Calcium Hydroxide to raise to around 4-4.5 and pitch another round of yeast. Let it sit in top until it's rehydrated and gently stir in after about 45 minutes to an hour. Mine took right back off.
It seems like your temp isn't an issue so you should be able to get it back up and running.
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Would baking soda be okay to raise ph as i dont have amy acces to calciium hydroxide and im going away for a week. Tried more chalk and yeast still nothingbcook608 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 25, 2022 7:46 amI just ran into a similar problem. Temp to high and ph dropped horribly. Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Baking soda is better than nothing.
I'd pitch some more yeast also.
Ya definitely need to rehydrate the yeast before pitching.
The yeast needs 10 to 15 minutes soaking up plain warm water, to get the cell wall functioning before being thrown in a hostile environment.
If by chance you have any ec1118 yeast, now would be the time to use it.

Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Kick the can over. You won't be the first.
Or.... seeing as you are going away and can't fiddle with it every day, I suggest you hang shells or limestone, (by it's various names), in it and hope for the best. You might get lucky.
I'm sure you'll do better next time.
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Cant i run it? I would obviously get a small yield but surely still something?NZChris wrote: ↑Wed Oct 26, 2022 12:40 amKick the can over. You won't be the first.

Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Run it when you get back home next week.
It might surprise you and ferment some more while you're gone.
The shine might not taste as good as it should have.
But you'll have something to drink as punishment while brewing another batch.
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Ill rehydrate and pitch some more yeast and add baking soda. Hopefully i can get the PH up to 5 and ill run it in a week.

I managaed to get PH up to 5 i then rehydrayed some yeast and pitched. 1 hour later foam cap on top and fizzing away. What a ride
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Well done, now back slowly away from the fermentor and let it do its thing.....

Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
Time for my holiday now. Then to run these once i get back home
Re: Shady's Sugar Shine
While you are on holiday, keep an eye out for blocks of marble and seashells. Any solid form of calcium carbonate is useful.

Room temp will work but 86*f will work better.
Just don't let the temp get higher than that.
