For some reason tonight I thought it was a good idea to fire up the turkey fryer/burner to get my new-er converted keg warmed up while I fumbled around to start pumping wash into the boiler.
Mind you it’s all soldered connections.
As I noticed wash dumping out the bottom onto the floor it dawned on me, your soldered 2” drain in the bottom of your keg will melt right out if you put too much fire to it without liquid inside.
Worst part is I literally just fixed some pinholes I found the other day and this was my first run again after cleaning and sac runs. Time to do it all over again…
I really am losing my edge
Lesson of the day: Don’t preheat the oven(boiler) before you stick in this turkey(wash)

Re: Don’t preheat the oven before you stick in the turkey
Be thankful that happened and not something worse. You get the bottom of the pot hot then start pouring in wash and get a face full of hot alcohol vapors, and possibly cerate a flash fire. not likely with wash, but if done with low wines, you could find yourself explaining the fire to the fire marshal.
Fear and ridicule are the tactics of weak-minded cowards and tyrants who have no other leadership talent from which to draw in order to persuade.

I agree, very bonehead move and I was lucky. A good amount of hot vapor did come up and luckily miss me. I also realized how fortunate I was with it being just lower ABV wash when it doused the flame out on the burner instead of something worse, all happening before I realized what was even happening.
All goes to show as a reminder of just how ugly things can get in a hurry here!
Trying to make myself feel better, at least I do have a fire extinguisher within reach in the shed at all times. Something a younger me wouldn’t have even considered.
I was fortunate enough to do tree work with/for a very wise mentor last year. It reminds me of the video he showed me of how quickly things get ugly around the wood chipper. It takes one small limb whipping sideways quickly and pulling the rope in with it. Possibly catching a leg on the way.
Video was a straw man tied to 100ft of rope and rope being fed in. Once the end of the rope gets by the feed wheels and the high rpm chip wheels get ahold of it he gets sucked into the chipper so fast he just blows apart when he hits the back. Wouldn’t have even made it into the chipper alive to feel that horrible pain.

If you wear a hoodie jacket around a chipper/moving equipment make sure you remove the hood draw string too.
🎱 The struggle is real and this rabbit hole just got interesting.
Per a conversation I had with Mr. Jay Gibbs regarding white oak barrel staves: “…you gotta get it burning good.”

But if you don't preheat the oven to at least 500° you don't get that delicious crispy skin!
