Column height

Post by Thor101 »

Is column height relevant for a pot still. My build so far has 36in of 3in copper, with a 6inch adapter at the bottom and a 9in tee at top giving total height of 46in before line arm.
I may in future pack the column and use a dephlegmator for reflux distilling, but primarily want to use it as a pot still

Nope, tall, short doesn't change anything. I like a tall riser so my boiler can sit on the floor and I can collect on a table or counter top. It would drive me nuts to collect low to the floor or to have the boiler elevated.

Like Salt said , it’s called a Riser not a Column .
Only when you pack it and use a reflux condenser or Deflag above it is it called a Column .

But also agree with Salt ,tall or short , it won’t change how the the still operates .OK , maybe it it were several metres tall and the air temp was really cold and you were doing a slow spirit run with very low power, there might be a bit of passive reflux especially at the start until the riser heated up . But really all that is going to achieve is making the run take longer

Build it so that the discharge ( dick) is is at your preferred collection height.
Old smart guys want to collect at a counter top height.

Young boys and fellers that like to do things the hard way collect on their knees.
Trample the injured and hurdle the dead.
