I saw bushman post this template in an old thread. I’ve seen different people do a 5mm (.2”) grid with 1.5mm (.06”) holes. Think there is much difference in performance? Or maybe another template floating around?

The advice I've been given is 1.5mm on 5mm and that's what I've run with, I think Setsumi has 2mm on 6mm. The open area is close to the same on them both

Try calculating your open area. I do not have a calculation at hand at this time but it should be the area of your hole times the number of holes devided by your plate area. The smaller your % open area the less heat input you will need. Myself like smaler %, between 4.5% and 6%. But if you have enough heat you could go higher.

I’ll dust my high school math and pocket protector off soon to do an open area calc on what I want for my plates
But tonight, I did some soldering :moresarcasm:

The bottom was my first attempt and needs cleaned up a bit still… but all in all I’m happy with how they turned out. Just need to hole saw them out and file them. Got a goal for next week!

Nice work prattman

Regarding the hole pattern . I did 1/16” on a 1/4” grid .

In reality any hole size and spacing will work just fine if you are in that ball park . There is no right or wrong so long as you don’t go silly outside the norm .
I believe OldDog had only 32 holes that were 3/16” and he could run it on 2400watts and wondered why everyone else bothered to drill so many more tiny holes .

Thing is , you will dial in your plate holes pretty quick and be making as good stuff as the others in no time .

Awesome work mate, well done.
It's probably worthwhile to fill up the sight glass mount to do a preliminary leak check to save you cleaning up twice.

Thanks yummy! My wife actually said she wants to try to make my plates for me, we have access to a “wazer” she called it. Basically a fancy water jet cutting tool run with adobe. Guy said a 5mm grid with the 1.5mm hole would be a breeze. So I’ll try out some itty bitty holes and see how it goes. Maybe I’ll end up making more sizes and be able to try them all out
Gonna have to get back to y’all in about a month for that

Sporacle, do you mean just filling up the sight glass “Reservoir” right now and see if there are leaks?

Exactly, it won't 100 percent test it but it will give you an idea if you've missed an area.

Did that last night, left if for almost an hour while I ate some food and put my stuff away. No leaks!
It is one worry of mine about all the modular pieces and stainless to copper connections, that I would have leaks everywhere.. just going to have to wait and see I guess :wtf:

Man, I’d really rather not cut the threads to much lol!
I have a little grinder attachment for my dremel. I got it with that for a bit and I can fit my glass in it. I think the threads are large enough that’s not going to cause a leak, but I’ll just have to wait and see I guess

BTDT - i learned those extra 'useless' handles you get with a drill are actually quite useful! :D

I would use a small ball pein hammer and a block of wood as a dolly and start gently tapping from the inside to pull that back out to roughly the right shape, you can use a small, dullened chisel with the hammer to push the lip back in where it is out, then use a file to clean up the threads. Power tools aren't going to do you any favors, with a file you will be able to make the re-thread true with the rest of the threading.

Designing the parrot tonight. I’ll drill some vent holes in the top 2” reducer and put that small 1/2” pipe between the two 2” reducers for some support, and trim the 3/8 pipe for my collection to the proper height when I get it all set. Thing feels like a monster :wtf:

I think it’s very close to ODs design. In the future, I think I’d like to take the 1” cap off and add a small valve to drain it

Looks good man, definantley go a valve.
Still considering if I'm going one for mine, I generally use a copper beaker in the collection jar.
I have started to think how I can do one with no valve and no smear
Copper gets heavy real quick

There is another say to fit a valve . The advantage is no Parrot smearing . When you want to take a reading , you close the valve to float the Alc meter .

Heres a couple of pics I snatched .

I drew a few designs incorporating the bypass. This is the one I think I’m going to do. It won’t change anything I’ve already soldered tonight and I’ve got everything laying around except the 1/2” valve.

Thank you yummy! I appreciate the kind words
I just picked up a bad mo barrel and would love to fill it with something from this soon to be new still of mine, it’s at a very exciting phase. It’s nearly done, I bought a needle valve this week and I believe :relaxed: that was the final piece I needed. Still some soldering to do… but I’m very close

Nice work Prattman, I love seeing people building , been some nice plated columns knocked out in recent times, yours being one of them.
Also good to see that you went to the trouble of puting up a build thread, every one of them that is on the forum helps the next new builder and gives them useful hints.

Thank you, I know I couldn’t have gone this far without the people here pioneering the way. I could only be happy if my documentation will help another guy decide to go for a build. Even a simple pot still is not outside anyone’s reach to construct.

It has taken a very long time to build. Don’t get me wrong, but the entire process has been very satisfying and im excited to have picked up new skills.

Here is the parrot I decided to go with. It seems so large
:lolno:

I ran some water through it. Didn’t appear to leak, and it functioned how it should. I still plan to add a collection pipe off the tee

What ever happened with this build? Did you finish it all up, are you running it? If so how is it working out for you? What would you change?

Very nice work man.
I have almost finished it. Couple of final soldering to do. But it’s been sitting in a bucket in my garage for the better part of a year now.
After my second daughter was born, the whole new baby phase took much of my time. She’s old enough now though I’ve been able to step back into this wonderful hobby!
I’ve got my shed all tuned up now too. 100 amp sub panel, put some ventilation and gfci/disconnects. Next step is to finish this monster haha. Stay tuned folks
