Yummy’s Pot still

Post by Yummyrum »

Just realised , I haven't posted my Pot still build here , so here goes .

This was my second Potty build . The first was a small
3/4” over 1/2” . This one was intended for a friends Hubby but I decided it was too good and kept it for myself and made him a slightly lesser model . :ewink:

As I distill mostly on gas , the thinking was to keep the collection end as far away as possible .
My first Pot still had hoses at each end ….. as most Liebigs do , but the one near the keg git scorched on a few occasions and the one near the product was too close to the collection area and always got in the way .

So I stole an idea from Stubbydrainer in CCSC and brought the coolant lines back to a safe place and added a control valve there . On my original Liebig , I had no local control if flow and had ti run to the tap to adjust flow .

So it was born . 1” over 3/4” . 1.6 metres if jacketed section .

Crimped inner tube and spiral wrapped to encourage efficient coolant flow

I had to braze up some brackets to support the coolant lines to where I wanted . I used liquid paper as a mask to stop the braze running and avoid later cleanup.

I use garden hose fittings so I brazed then up at the same time . Note the big block of Pumas …… thats a trick I learned from my Dad . Its great to hold stuff while you braze it .

So here are all the bits ready for assembly .

I added a ring of cork inside the brackets to insulate the coolant lines from the still ….. its probably a mute point …. but hey . Lucky point was that the copper tube cutter kinda forms a lip on the tube so it holds the cork in place .

Clocked it at about 27litres /h before ai chickened out and wound the gas back down to a sensible point .

That's the beast from your video in my thread Yummyrum! Wow!

If I ever build another Liebig I'll be blatantly copying that design feature for the coolant line routing for sure.

I'd really like to have a stripping rig that I can run on fire in the garden, because I'm tight and because it would be cool, and a condenser that kind of length would be perfect for it.
But alas, my neighbours would soon suss what I'm doing, so it will have to stay in my dreams.
If I could do it though, what you've built there is perfection.

Such a cool picture of that Liebig in the moonlight. One of my favorites so far, thanks for sharing.
Freedom had been hunted round the globe; reason was considered as rebellion; and the slavery of fear had made men afraid to think. But such is the irresistible nature of truth, that all it asks, and all it wants, is the liberty of appearing.

Yummy with all that beautiful copper work you should change the valve handles to your own. I copied Mash Rookies idea.
