What MasonJar Lid Is Safe?

Post by davek14 »

I know there is a huge controversy over plastics and such. Question is, is there any mason jar lid which is considered by all to be safe? And, by safe I mean to where it can be heated with strong alcohol (I am going to make extractions, etc.)

Anything which all consider to be safe to use. Even expensive, special made, whatever.

Mason jar, strong alcohol, heat. These things sound like a big safety red flag.

If said mason jar full of strong alcohol is in a pot of water - 212f. And jar breaks, what happens to all the strong etoh? Does it vaporize quickly?

If expensive is an approach then why even use a mason jar?

Cheers,
J

Agreed. If all you want is safe storage solutions, then you can buy or make PTFE liners for the metal lids. Other than that, I know if nothing. In theory, it should be possible to make a stainless lid and a cork gasket, but you quickly get to the point that it’s not worth the time and money.

There are safe alternatives including ptfe liners, oak , and antique glass lids.

Look into lab glassware. Borosilicate and glass stoppers.

... but it would be good if you defined your requirements and use.
