I think you're going to find the liquid will pool, then the end grain portions of the groove are going to start carying it away like little wicks, then more will flow down until a week later all you have is an empty jar and the fastest barrel candy anyone has ever made.
But go for it! Take pictures, let us know. I love a good experiment!

Soaked for a day and a half, let's see where it's at in a few months.
Obviously the booze to oak ratio is ridiculous but that's a different discussion

That looks awesome! A borad of 3 or 5 of them would be pretty cool too!Swedish Pride wrote: ↑Sun Jul 02, 2023 10:03 am IMG_20230702_185935.jpg

I don't think the surface/volume ratio is as far off as you might think, but it'll be interesting to see how much wicking happens.
Keep us posted!
Re: mason jar lids
damn should have waited on buying that wood and just found me a barrel, anyway the wood came in today so set the router up with the circle jig and hope to find some time tomorrow to play.
the router circle jig requires a 1/8 hole to be drilled in the wood for a pin that is used to center the hole size. Do yall think filling the 1/8 hole with bees wax would seal? Maybe a 1/8 wood dowel and bees wax?
wood looks good definitely needs to be weathered and spend some time in the oven, need to find a barrel

Use your circle jig on some scrap plywood to make a template that you can use with a pattern or flush trim bit, or a guide bushing.

Re: mason jar lids
as scrap piece is always a given, yummy a 1/4 is not enough to play with the router needs to be planted. if i had a barrel to play with could make it work without drilling through.

Re: mason jar lids
Yeah, looks a bust alright, will give it a full month just for the Craig
Next test will be to have it just as a lid in a normal upright orientation.
I'd expect similar results to your experiment with a hole in a flagon lid

test piece out of birch. 1/8 seal lip seems just right.

Re: mason jar lids
Well I don't consider it a bust. You've done all the work and were gracious enough to post your results for us to see. And maybe it will ignite a thought in someone else who's on a similar experiment.Swedish Pride wrote: ↑Sat Jul 08, 2023 11:48 am Yeah, looks a bust alright, will give it a full month just for the Craig

a couple mistakes on the first couple planks, ended up with 29.
Might give these skewers a go. they are .16 diameter

Those look great! Interested to see how they seal. Some beeswax might help.

Re: mason jar lids
My version doesn't seal well at all, but they stay upright and give what I consider a reasonable angels share over 6 months to a year. After that they get replaced with solid lids or the spirit is moved into bottles.jonnys_spirit wrote: ↑Sun Jul 09, 2023 12:30 pm Those look great! Interested to see how they seal. Re: mason jar lids
Maybe a thin strip of cork sheet or ptfe wrapped around the "bung" could work as a gasket for this if someone wanted to fine tune. Something with some "give" for any swelling.TwoSheds wrote: ↑Mon Jul 10, 2023 5:22 amMy version doesn't seal well at all, but they stay upright and give what I consider a reasonable angels share over 6 months to a year. KISS is certainly my go-to unless complexity is required so there's always that.
If storing upright is there any oak coloring/flavoring or anything like that without adding fingers or stave pieces?
Cheers,

Re: mason jar lids
Nope. Not that I can sense. I add chunks of barrel stave for flavor/color. My lids are purely for air exchange.jonnys_spirit wrote: ↑Mon Jul 10, 2023 6:14 am If storing upright is there any oak coloring/flavoring or anything like that without adding fingers or stave pieces?

Did you use anything to seal the wood to the jar ?

No just hand tight yummy.
Going to let it sit another 24 hrs inverted standing up like Swedish pride had his. Wondering if the head pressure of additional height would make a difference. Within a half hour i can see more penetration of liquid in the oak but no water spewing yet, will see how it goes.

Re: mason jar lids
I'm really liking this approach for a smaller batch solera or longer series of solera stages where you might be able to develop some different toast/char/wood levels into the series with a number of progressively more used wood stages leading to an endpoint. If it can seal consistently with opening/closing multiple times...
Cheers!

Re: mason jar lids
I reckon it's safe to call this a bust by now
About half gone in 3 weeks, can't be having that.
After next spirit run I'll try it just as a lid and see how that goes
