My first spirit run

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

My first spirit run

Post by STILL WORKIN »

A little surprised that after 31 400ml jars including 7 x 600ml and my abv from the parrot has finally come down to 70%.
with all the reading i have done I thought... I don't know what i thought.
#32. I have a Ferguson copper 25gal still with a insulated 8gal thumper and a 5 gal worm. i charged 8gal @ 40 % give or take and added 2 gal 48% to 2gal wineos wash in the thumper # 33. Would my cuts be as normal or could the tails be in the 70 to 78% range as well. I'm asking for an opinion cuse my fingers and nose will be in each jar tomorrow. # 34 73%. To say the least i'm very surprised at the length of the abv.#35 72%. Im not greedy I think i chuck alot but @ 70%
Normal can only be normal if you can if you can imagine what normal can be. # 35 70%
Ran a 24 gal of Hooks yesterday. God bless him!

A photo would be helpfull, there are so many commercially made stills available today.
On top of that many of the cheaper ones are almost identical, just marketed under different names.

I agree. I just don't know how. I assure you my rig is real. go to ferguson copper in prince george bc. But what i was wondering was is that is what I should expect . the consistent abv? I need more jars.

Free up some jars by filling a large container with the most odorless jars from the middle of the run.

If that’s it I’m jealous

Nice boiler

After a bit of googling I found them to SS .......nice enough looking stills , but the price is enough to make my poor old eyes water.
But then I have Scottish in me blood so maybe I got short arms and long pockets.

Yes, that is what you should expect.

Starting with 40% abv in the boiler and about 25% abv in the thumper will keep the thumper liquid abv high ( 36% to 23% ) for a long period of run time. That abv will give a 80-70 % vapor to the worm.

Go to the HD Calculator Section. Click on Haggy Pot Thumper Calculator. Input your data. Here is what you will see.

Hey NZ. I have been reading you for a long time. I filled 7 1lt jars as well. I was just unprepared for the volume. Next time I'll be more prepared and not so amazed.

Thank you Stonecutter that is my rig. It has a gin basket as well and between it and the Edelmetel burner it rocks. The craftsmanship is top shelf.

Thanks aka Haggy. The chart I'll look for it. However i'm on propane. Thank you for the answer. Got to love a thumper. Cheers!

The Pot Thumper Calculator can be used with a propane burner setup. Just find the watts that give the same run time to tails or to a certain spout abv % as the real run with a certain propane setting.

Also, the time to heat up the pot to boiling with a certain wattage is given in the calculator results. This could be correlated with the propane setting.

+1 Nice still and thumper

Thanks, I think if the still had one more option I would marry it.
The most confusing part is I shut down at 62% . When I run without the thumper I start at 62%. Now i strip with it.
Thanks for the chart. I will use it or at least learn it first then use it.
I got 4.5 gals and 1.5 gal head/tails tossed first qt and a half. It has almost no smell at 43% and with oj tastes great.
Can't wait to se what a couple months does for it.
Goin to have a Hooks for desert .

Cheers!
