Living in Costa Rica, I can easily get (and at a good price) high end Flor de Caña from Nicaragua, and high end Centenario from Cost Rica, and most Zacapas from Guatemala. However, there are several highly rated rums that just aren't easily available--including Zafra from nearby Panamá
I'm visiting my son in Denver, so we went "shopping" today. We had rum tastings of the six following rums:
Zacapa Edición Negra
Zafra Master Reserve 21
Plantation XO 20th anniversary
Clement XO Agricole
El Dorado 15 Special Reserve
Diplomático Reserva Exclusiva
We took notes individually and then compared. We agreed about about last place and were closely aligned about the middle ground. We differ on number 1. However, in tasting 6 of them, we thought we might "lose our palates" toward the end. So we are going to taste test the same ones tomorrow, but in reverse order from tonight.(It's a sacrifice, but research demands it.) Taking new notes and ratings. Then we will also add in a tasting of my own recent batch--which I think tastes most like Zacapa Solera 23
Then on a third night, he is inviting a couple of friends over and we will all do completely blind tasting of all 7.
I'm curious to see how our opinions change (if they do) over the next two tasting days.
Stay tuned for more results, but I will tell you that at the moment, for me, Numero Uno is Zafra Master Reserve 21
