Going down the rabbit hole

Post by Paradox »

What started out as idle curiosity has led me on an interesting and educational journey so far. When I first started down this path I had no idea just how much i didn't know.

For whatever reason, a random video of an old timer making his shine out of a dirty bucket in a shed somewhere popped up in one my feeds, and that was enough to get the wheels turning I suppose. Before I knew it, I somehow ended up with one of those Chinese stills sitting in my basement and the research ramped up. After a couple of days owning it and all the upgrades I was looking to make to it right away to make it more usable, I quickly came to the conclusion that I probably needed something different. Well, that and a quick test on all the brass fittings that revealed they all contained lead, was enough for me to pack it all up and send it back. Looked at maybe getting a keg, but settled on a milk can instead.

Watched tons of videos on YouTube, you all know the ones. Some good information, some not so good...... I did find myself reading more and more threads here, and have been a lurker for a long time, so I figured I may as well just sign up. I've been able to find answers to all the questions I've had up to this point here, and even some answers to questions I didn't even know I had yet. Pretty great place you've got here. All grain is a goal, and I look forward to continuing the learning process.

Welcome aboard
There are two types of people in this world.
1. Those that can extrapolate from incomplete information.

Welcome aboard Paradox, reading your introduction tells me your learning quickly about the good and bad of distilling and that you have already found the right path, be that stills or information.
Way to many folk get trapped by those cheap shit stills.

Yeah, I figured that out pretty quickly. Hate to admit however that I got a little too far ahead of myself in regards to heating element control. I drank the wrong kool-aid for a minute, but after reading here I realized that I should have went with my gut instead of what I was seeing on YouTube. Lesson learned I suppose.

Your not the first, but learned right from wrong easier and more quickly than some have.
