Hi all,
I ordered a butterfly valve from Ali but didn't check what the gasket was made out of. Asking the seller I learned it was "silica gel VMQ" which I assume is the same as Silica rubber VMQ. As described on this site it's not recommended for use with steam, but other than that I don't see any counterindicators against ethanol use.
I'd rather not have to manufacture my own seal in PTFE, so I'm trying to find out if this is ok to use as-is in my still, or if I have to switch the material out. I'm awaiting respons from the seller for more info, but thought I'd check you y'all as well.
Any thoughts?

If it ain't copper, stainless, boro glass, or ptfe we do not approve. Wrap it in ptfe tape if possible or look for a Teflon replacement

I have one of those. I used it on the bottom of my mash tun. Having had a look at it, I wouldn't trust it against strong alcohol, especially if it were heated. Ferments should be fine, but low wines and above would be a no-no!Jaktpanda wrote: ↑Thu Sep 28, 2023 12:23 am Hi all,

Alright, thanks for the advice. I'll look at rolling my own since replacement in PTFE aren't available as far as I can see.
Cheers!
