4" Domed lid on Clawhammer Still?

Post by Novy »

Does anyone know if the 4" Diameter domed lid from Milehigh would fit a clawhammer milk can still? They look the same to me, but I can't find dimensions on them.

Text MileHi and Clawhammer and as for the diameters to compare.

Instead of replacing the lid you could just add a reducer. I assume you're trying to go larger than the Clawhammer 1.5" diameter. In that case a 1.5" - 4" reducer would work. Cheaper, too:

Since the Clawhammer is probably an 8 gallon still 4" would seem to be overkill. I know that a 1.5 to 2" reducer is a pretty good fit for that still. I have wondered for a while if the 1.5" takeoff reduces the efficiency of the 2 in. pipe, and if so, how much.

That's why I suggested the reducer ... there are more variables than just column diameter to consider.

I have two MH milk cans - one copper 16g, the other SS 13g - and they're both 8" openings at the top of the milk can. The lids for both are interchangeable in practice and have 3" TC throats. I'd like a 4" throat for when I add a couple plate segments before reducing the 3" for my CCVM RC. I don't want any additional restriction in the vapor path but that's just me :)

Cheers!

I have the Clawhammer SS 8 gal with a 1.5 column. I called Emmet and inquired about a new lid, he gave me the same advice on using an adaptor. The lid is an 8" diameter if you measure from middle gasket to middle gasket. I believe.

I called Olympic Distillers, the guy was not friendly what so ever, but he said their lids were 9" I believe.

Clawhammer staff is super helpful and friendly. I am glad I purchased from them. They have the experience running those stills, so I email Emmet alot, lol...

Happy distilling!

Some one is listening to demand and Mile Hi now offers the 8" tri-clamp lid with 2" and 3" ports. Or Clawhammer is offering shotgun condensers now to over come the tiny, inefficient liebig condenser that come on the 8gal SS.
