Copper Vs Stainless steel condeser

Post by Moon_Moon »

Hy all,

There is something I wish to confirm with you all before I go on building anything. I have an old pot still (50L) and a barrel condenser with a copper pipe. It is however quite run down and I will make a new one which I will also use for a new still I intend to build (100 - 200L, don't know yet, depends on my spare income and how fast I wish to finish my season)

I have read the literature in my country(there was not much of it) and it was mentioned that the pipe through which the vapor runs and eventually condenses should be preferably made with SS.

The reasons stated were easier cleaning(which I get and is logical) but the other reason is that when the vapor recondenses it reacts with the copper pipe and that can produce funky flavors while the SS pipe does not. Is there any validity in this before I make a more expensive purchase than it needs to be?

Most condensers I see on the forum are made out of copper and mostly with jackets and sleeves so it got me thinking, either the SS stated benefit is not true or the price is not worth it. I prefer my barrel solution as I have space and a barrel is more than enough to get me through for the 50l pot. But there is a significant price difference between the copper worm and a SS one

Thank you all for the help in advance.
