How to add a Link in your post

Post by Yummyrum »

This may be obvious to the seasoned forum user but is not so obvious to folk new to forums ....or Computers.

So say you found a post but want to link to it in your post ,this how you would do it .
There are two ways , one will show the URL in pale blue under-score .When the link is clicked on , it will take you to the post .
Looks like this .

viewtopic.php?p=7521983#p7521983

The second way is more complicated , but it looks less cluttered in your post . It also has a pale blue under-score to click on but is a label rather than the actual URL .

Nice one Shady

Method 1
(If you can't see the pictures clearly , just click on them to make them bigger .) :ewink:

first you need to find the post that you wish to link to .
Right Click on the heading above the post .A drop down Menu will appear . Left Click on "Save Link Address"
Copy link.jpg
Now go to your new post .( or start one )
At the position in your post where you want the link , Right click and a Drop down Menu will appear . Left click on "paste"
Paste link.jpg
The Link will be inserted in your Post .
Inserted link.jpg
When you click Submit , Your post will have a Light Blue Underscored Link that can be clicked on that will take you to the Post

Method 2

so assuming you have found the Link and Right clicked and "copy Link address" as above , this time we will Left Click on the "link" Icon .
This will Put the URL option in your post .
URL option.png
the Curser should be between the Square Brackets .If not , click it there .
Now type in the Label you want for the link.

In this case , I want the link to display as" Well done from Shineon".
Link Label.png
Now I have to add the link ( it should still be copied to my clipboard )
First I have to set the curser just before the Square bracket at the end of the first [URL]
Set Cursor.png
Type"="
The"=" is important as it lets the Forum software know that what follows is the actual link address
Type=.png
Immediately after the "=" right click to bring up Drop-down Menu .Left click "paste"
The copied Link address will be added to you post .
Click Paste.png
So now it all looks like complete Gobblygook but this is the Code that the forum uses sothat when you press Submit , it knows what to do .
complete.png
But when I submit post , it now shows a LightBlue Under-score link which can be clicked on .

Another way that is also very quick and easy is to find the post you want to link to, select and copy the URL in the address bar, and paste it into your message. I'm linking to this thread here:
viewtopic.php?p=7773292#p7773292

EDIT:
Alternatively, I also copied the direct link to my message/response to this thread (right click on the message title and select "copy link", then paste it into your message:
viewtopic.php?p=7773359#p7773359

Cheers!

Jonny ,I believe that is what I have shown in my first example .
I know it is easy , but believe it or not , some folk have no idea what copy and paste are . Thats why I added pics .
My folks are in their 80s and have no idea even when I have shown them several times .
But when I made tutorials and printed them out , they were able to look at them and do step by step.

Agree that way works just as well  .. Iff'n you are familiar with how to copy and paste . As I said above , the words copy and paste mean nothing if you have never done it before .I know that sounds stupid to most but it is a thing for some .

I chose to do it the way I did because I wanted to do a pictorial version .Some folk learn better with pics , while others are better at words .
The way the address bar varies from Apples, androids and PCs , means I’d have had to do many versions of the same thing whereas the way I showed can be used on any platform .
Admittedly , if someone has an iphone or android and are unable to get their fingers around highlighting stuff and/or bringing up select /copy / paste stuff then thats a whole knew drama .
But once folk are familiar with cut and paste , they can try the way you guys say on their device . But I bet my Dad would still be scratching his head if I told him to highlight the address bar and copy it . :o
