Hello from a European distilling enthusiast

Post by nerdmax »

I've learned a lot from this forum since acquiring a traditional copper pot still back in 2017, originally to turn my surplus hard cider into something more interesting. During lockdown I got interested in making gin and used my mechanical skills to build a Bokakob column that sits on top of my pot still boiler. The Bokakob is a fantastic design, easy to build and produces great results, really clean 95% abv every time (from sugar wash + Turbo Pure yeast). This is clean enough to make a respectable vodka, and makes a great base for gin. Odin's Easy is my favorite recipe, but I play around with variations from time to time.

I have a background in software and engineering and I've invested a lot of time in automating my still, using an Arduino micro controller. This has been particularly useful with my Bokakob, which required a lot of babysitting and fine tuning of the needle valve to maintain a slow and steady flow of distillate at the correct rate. I'm planning to share some of the details in future posts.
