Does anybody have a recipe for this? An Austrian friend gave me a bag of pine balls and asked me to make this .

I’m not sure what a pine ball is. Is that what is also called a cone? I know many trees have male polin cones and female seed cones. I’ve not used cones before.

I did made a Douglass Fir spirit using fresh new growth green tips and the new needles from a fir tree. I was not going by any recipe, so I can’t say what I did was right or wrong. I was inspired by a bottle of fir spirits that I purchased from a local distillery as a novelty.

I picked the light green new growth buds and needles in early spring. I used a gin still with a neutral in the boiler and the young growth placed in the vapor basket for the run. If smelled and tasted as one would expect…. like a fir tree. Go figure!

I didn’t think it was worthy it’s own drink. I could see adding fir oil with other botanicals for a gin though, but I have not gone there yet.

Sorry I got off track here with fir talk. If you can, please show me a picture of what a pine ball looks like, and of course post what you end up trying and how it turns out.

Searching the web for Swiss stone pine cone should find at least one image of a sliced cone.

I battled my way through my neighbor's jungle to get close enough to see that it's too late to collect any this season and to see that they are too high for an old fart like me to pick anyway.
