hip flask discolouring rum

Post by howie »

the ANZAC day service went ok, and i took my new hip flask along for a few nips of 40% rum before/after service.
the taste of the 7:40am swig was different, i put that down to the time and toothpaste
the after service swigs were poured into small 30ml coloured shot glasses, so the colour of the spirit was imperceptible.
however, 6 days later, i thought i'd better use the leftover rum in a Dark & Stormy.
the dark colour on the left is what came out of the flask, original on the right.

on obtaining the instructions for the hip flask, it says not to keep alcohol in there for longer than 3 days!
that'll teach me to read the instructions :)
hopefully i haven't poisoned some unsuspecting diggers & kiwis (or myself), as the rum was only in the flask overnight before we had our swigs.

this morning i had another thought (yes, 2 in 1 week)
i've read of some folk asking about keeping low wines & spirits in S/S cornies, and the answer has been 'it's ok' (if i remember correctly)
is it ok?
