UJSSM. 1st generation strip and a double the size 2nd generation using all of the backset and trub.

I couldn't find my frozen backset so had to start from scratch. Found it today while looking for bait

Did the spirit run for a natural mashed 30% flaked rye, 30% malted rye, 32% Wheat, and 8% oats.... turned out amazing!

Just charged the boiler with 48l at 35%. 10l of the alcohol was previously run 94% and the rest was collected feints. Diluted with clean water to a safe ABV. I suspect I'll get between 3 and 3.5 gallons of clean neutral from this run if I don't stuff it up.

I'm not a gin drinker. This will all be diluted back down to vodka strength for cocktails, but yeah, the last time I made 2.5 gallons of 95% it lasted me over 2 years.

Twisted Brick beat me to it, but there's lots of other very happy reasons to be sat on potentially 8gal of vodka!

Maybe with that kind of stock, a Gin experiment is worth a go too?

Yesterday afternoon did a spirit run on some absinthe, now got. About 2L @70% with some colouring herbs. Also did ~45L of SBB Rum, slow one and done through 4 bubble plates for some white, that I’ll do cuts on tonight.

Gin run straight after work, gonna need some nice long cold G&Ts for the hot weather out in the garden this weekend!

1l run with botanical bill for 2l added to the pot, proofed down with RO and blended with 43% neutral to taste.
1715363241087898694157236863905.jpg
Total yield 3 and a bit 700ml bottles.

Ran the skanky tails into a collection bottle as usual, once there's a litre of gin tails built up I'll add half the usual amount of botanicals and run it, I get a couple of free bottles out of that run!

Having just emptied the tank, checked pulse for hangover assessment, and noticed the microwave clock said it wasn’t the middle of the night, I stepped outside into Autumn and plugged in my still full of rum low-wines. Someone impersonating me had filled it yesterday for just this situation. I don’t often congratulate myself but well-done that man. Time for a cuppa tea. Big day today: the mighty Hurricanes are playing the high-flying Blues, and there’s the small matter of a Karaoke 40th Party to attend to.

I like that idea. Been wondering what to do with my gin "feints".

And I'm gonna have to start doing the gin essence thing. It never occurred to be what a time saver it could be.

Yeah it's definitely worthwhile doing. I put the first 10ml off the still into the feints too and that adds loads of flavour.
I leave the still running after approx 440ml (Per litre) of the good stuff, dripping into a gin feints bottle while I proof, mix and bottle the gin I just made, I don't measure it or anything so it's a bit slapdash I'll be honest, I just run it until I'm done messing around with bottles etc and kill the power.

I've got into the habit now of doing a double botanical batch, so sometimes it's a 2l run and I end up with over 4lts of finished gin.
A 1l batch takes less time to actually run, than it takes me to set up and put away my freak of a still.

Three strips of grappa. I'll probably do the spirit run tomorrow because I need the jars for another job.

Made an all grain 55% corn ,30% 6 row, and 15% malted rye. Had some that I made about 10 years ago and it was great so why not another go round. The family will be able to enjoy it if I'm not around then

Brewed some witbeer and then made a sugarhead on the spent grains to add to my BeerHead(tm) project.

Never heard of it. A quick search gave me the basics. What gives it a orange, honey or vanilla taste as they describe? Is this purely from the wheat?

In my experience of distilling, wheat can give a slight honey or butterscotch flavour and a hint of citrus fruit all by itself, but most recipes use some botanicals. The one I tried used coriander and sweet orange peel dosed at 1g / litre (In the bottle... so a 20 litre batch uses 20g of each).

I won't know how well it worked until about 3 to 4 weeks from now. :-)

Every once and a while I treat myself to a cold beer. Can't have to much because of a gluten allergy, gives me a rash  .
This sounds delicious, maybe one day I'll find the time to try a small batch 🍻

Hop gin. I'd run out of neutral and hadn't been able to make gin for so long that I'd lowered myself to actually buying a couple of bottles to tide us over.

first version of a brand new gin recipe - lemon rind/lemon myrtle/rose & cardamom. The last batch I made of my house recipe I added orris and angelica to try to lock in the flavour/aroma for longer, but overdid the orris and ended up with an "earthy" component that has softened in time but is still noticeable. Just a pinch of Angelica in this batch (2L) and its so far so good.

Sounds good Beefer.

I too get a "Mud" flavour from orris even at the recommended low addition, so I only use angelica now.

Cardamom scares me because it's just so pungent and so easily masks the lighter flavours.

I've only ever used x/100 for orris, grow my own, and can't say that I can taste it in the finished gin. It smells nice in the apothecary jar.
I doubt I've used more than x/100 Cardamom in any herbal style recipe and don't recall it being a problem in any.
