Disappointed by the bad information

Post by Demy »

I was watching some videos on YouTube and reading some articles. I realize that a person cannot be an expert but sometimes there is a crazy level of ignorance. I commented on several videos pointing out the misinformation while watching a bunch of idiots excited about being able to make whiskey in 10 minutes. I wonder why they don't spend an hour of their time learning before posting incorrect information. They could at least give the right info then say "you could try this quick method".

An important part of doing any research is to investigate if the information is coming from a reliable source. I was lucky enough to be doing my research before Youtube had been invented. Information was harder to find but came without the same easy access to BS from nutters that the internet provides.

There is no watchdogs to keep people on track. That is the beauty of a forum. If someone gives wrong or misinformed information there are others with experience to challenge the what is being said. YouTube has a place on wiFi and I use it when someone demonstrates a how to video on appliances but I usually watch more than one video to make sure I have the correct info.

You tube is great for lots of things. Stillin just isn't one of them. I recall a few of the experts bringing their expertise here and getting called out on it. Not only does some not work but almost half of the stuff there can get you killed. Get your stilling info here

Don't get me wrong... YouTube is a very useful medium, I also upload videos... but some people show absurd things when it comes to certain things. I am Italian and I have seen absurd things on Italian videos....according to them you can obtain pure alcohol only by mixing water, sugar and pizza yeast. No post-fermentation distillation obviously....and in the comments I read "you're a genius, thank you very much".....same thing on some websites...just an example.

Generally speaking YouTube is a great media for visual learners and a haven for the “content creators” that get off on seeing themselves “on tv” and hearing themselves talk. That’s why they’re called content creators, because they are rewarded for generating view of ads for google/youtube. They’re not called competent teachers. It’s on the viewer to cipher out who knows what they’re talking about and who’s just generating clicks; this same responsibility exists in forums, it’s just easier to call out someone on their bs. It’s no different than getting specialized advise in real life. You’re not going to take legal or medical etc advice from everyone that rocks up to the water cooler or the break room, you’re going to have to figure out who knows what they’re talking about and who to avoid.

That said, I am by no means a fan boy of stillit, and I can see the merits of some of the criticism he has received, but I’ve not seen him advocate anything other than running safely and as his tagline goes “grow the craft as a legitimate hobby”. The whole point of it is to get new people into the hobby and grow it to the point of “legitimacy”. There are a number of other distilling channels I simply won’t watch as I’ve made the determination there isn’t any value there. But that’s how media works, I don’t watch soap operas either.

There are two types of people in this world.
1. Those that can extrapolate from incomplete information.
