Methanol collection?

Post by Dfitts1984 »

Hi, i have received a new still. An 8 gallon still with a football shaped vapor chamber that comes with a valve at the very top. After some research, im told its used to release the methanol that boils off between 148 degrres farenheit and 160 farenheit. How long do i actually have to collect just to throw out?

A. Bishop had a video on that still. I believe he called it the Lombardi.

PLEASE do more studying on the subject of methanol production during fermentation and distillation. Look specifically for when methanol is formed, how methanol is affected by distillation.

Read research papers specific to methanol and the distillation of spirits.

Use a reputable search engine and read research papers. Avoid opinions stated on forums.

As Dancing4dan says: study some more and you'll find out you hardly have to worry about methanol. The nasties (acetaldehyde, aceton and the like) in the first part of your run smell bad enough so you will try to avoid them all by yourself. You just have to smell and taste. These parts are called foreshots and heads.
It is almost impossible to generate and collect enough methanol to worry about. The stories about accidents are caused by deliberately or accidently adding methanol to an otherwise correct product.

I suspect that the people who manufacture and supply the instructions for those particular stills don't understand distilling very well.
