corn prices.

Post by cannon.co.tn »

What are y'all paying for corn. I just picked up a 50lb bag or cracked corn for $15 or about .30/lb

Is this about right or am I paying a premium for living in a densely populated area?

FWIW: I live in the SF Bay Area
I make my own beer

I paid $6.50 for a 40 lb. bag of cracked corn at walmart. Check it out in the pet food section.

Just was in a feed store (my first one :) ) $0.18/lb for a 55 lbs (25kg) bag.
I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it left.

The elevators buy it from us at about $5.75 per bushel. A bushel of corn weighs about 55-58lbs, the elevator guy's eyes bulged out of his head when ours tested 62 lbs./bu.  So, on average, they're giving us about $0.10/lb.

This corn/ethanol bullshit ain't working except for BW and the 13 acres I got planted

But seriously, we all know corn ain't the most efficient and sugar cane/sorgam is a better way to go. Its effects are trickling down and messing up a lot of things...IMHO.

Don't want to get political here so I'll hush.

But, believe it or not, I'm college educated (Hell No! It ain't Clemson) and degreed in economics of all things. This ain't sustainable and the pendulum will swing back again.

Of course, there is the China/India variable that ain't figured into the text book equitations in the short term.

Who knows. There is always the Cuba situation and an endless supply of sugar cane if it ever gets freely available. Corn will get put on the back burner then and the prices will equalize once again. Hopefully in our lifetimes.

Yeah, it costs a shitload to produce corn anymore. $1,000/ton for DAP, $625/ton for potash I believe. Glyphosate (Roundup for the city folk) is through the roof because Monsanto bought all of the tech material on the market and China had to close a few big glyphosate plants for the 2008 Olympic Games. I've heard talk of actually rationing it, there's so little on the market left. Don't get me started on new equipment. Thank god I bought all of my stuff the last fall.

The trick is, when corn prices finally go down, those material figures aren't, because we're the lowest guys on the totem pole, and everybody shits on us and doesn't care. A lot of little guys are not going to be able to support themselves anymore. We've already absorbed about 50-100 acres from the small guys who just can't make enough to justify the cost of tech material.

Enough with my rant, on with the others!

Better hang onto some of those seed too.

I envision the day when genetically modified crops put out grain that won't germinate and you can only get seed from the patent holder, ie, Monsanto. Then they will rule the world and wars will be fought for new reasons. Maybe I'm being paranoid, I don't know.

Old_Blue I don't think you're being paranoid at all, it's the Microsoft syndrome. Folk round here scroungin up soybean seed, those what booked can't get their booked seed and they done booked the harvest already too. Talkin bout lawyering up. Lay folk don't realize that the farmer is the only producer in the country that don't set the price for what he produces. When a good year does come around after a decade or two of want that's when the chemical companies raise an eye brow and gouge him the next year. It's all a circle jerk just like the rest of the world is getting, but farming's what I consider one of the last few good honest livings a man and his family can make these days.

I do some commercial fishing--same problem as farming--somebodyelse sets the price and the gov't just cut our quota another 10%. Price of diesle for the boat has doubled.
I hope my customers who farm corn and beans have a good year--they'll help pick up the slack for me on sports fishing.

Just thought I would pass on another challenge of brewing in the north. Cracked corn here is $ 53.00 / 22 KG bag or $ 1.06 a pound. I can get
the same for $ .18 cents a pound if i drive approx 1500 km down into Alberta. Or pay the freight and find some place to store 250 - 500 kg of corn.
10kg sugar 17.00
I guess it's a small price to pay for love.
Cheers!
