European Oak barrel

Post by Maddogbrewing »

I found a cheap new 5L European Oak barrel I’m looking to age whiskey, from what I’ve read European Oak has a harsher flavour. What would be a good whiskey to age in it?

Single malt?

How long you planning to age? You could try a second-use barrel.

Your bigger issue will be balancing the oak flavour in general with the time in the barrel; you will have that same issue whether you age in European or American oak.

Deffo not harsh flavors from European oak.
Do age a bourbon or corn it it first to break it in.
Second fill is great for whiskey.

I think my lil 5l European oak is on its 4th fil by now, still exxellent
