Hello

Post by Nebulous »

Hey everyone, here is my newbie intro post.

I've very recently gone down the distillation rabbit hole and have found myself almost obsessed with acquiring knowledge on the hobby. I stated down the path by buying a 5l oak barrel to age/finish some scotch in. . .which lead me ask what it would take to make my own whisky instead of trying to improve some cheap stuff from Dr Dans.

So I'm keen to make my own whisky and after doing a couple of practice neutrals I'm also keen to make my own gin . . .I also plan to do a ginger beer when my fermentor is free, and also some burbon and rum down the track.

My attitude/interest/passion in this craft is similar to my baking, I like to use proper recipes and I'm not interested in using packet mixes. Because of this I'm not really interested in turbos or cordial style flavoured neutral spirits, and am keen to learn how to ferment on the grain, age with oak, use good recipes and ingredients and spend the time produce a quality end product.

My setup is a 35L digiboil, both a Alcoengine reflux and pot still, alembic copper dome, sightglass gin basket, 32L stainless conical fermentor with heat mat and temp controller (I'll put all the links below). My next purchase is a I cooling lid for the fermentor and pump cool water from a camping fridge to manage the high temps I have to deal with here in Qld.

Looking forward to learning more from this forum! Keen to hear any thoughts or recommendations regarding my chosen setup😊

Hello and welcome!! There are quite a few rabbit holes, I have fallen down a couple. I think my next rabbit hole will be a dunder pit. I wanted to start one this summer, but it didn't happen. Maybe next summer.
Enjoy the ride
