First Wort Hops (FWH) to prevent foaming/puking?

Post by PalCabral »

Are there any distillers that are using FWH to prevent puking when stripping a whiskey mash?

As a brewer, this was a common way to prevent foaming issues when you did the boil. By adding some of the hops, pellets or whole, while heating up the wort, it would release oils that in turn would keep it from foaming. If you used a lot, then it would of course also be part of the flavoring of the beer.

I was thinking a few hop cones or a small amount of hop pellets from some low alpha type would not put much flavor to the wash but perhaps keep it from puking during the strip run. Any one tried this? If not, what are you using (if any)?

Hops are not good in spirits.

I use a bit of butter in spirit runs and a brewing defoamer in stripping runs.

Cheap veg oil for me when I needed it, but now I've built a big stripper I have so much headspace it's not needed.

A knob of butter is all I've ever used. Works well for AG as well as molasses stripping runs.

Definitely a lot cheaper to use bit of butter or canola oil. Will try.

I'll add to the chorus ..... a tablespoon of butter in my 30 gallon stripping boiler keeps the foam down enough that I've never had a puke. I've never had a foaming issue in the spirit run boiler, a half barrel keg.

I use this & it works well.
