Vinegar run with wooden thumper

Post by 00Buck »

Yall ever did your vinegar runs with a wooden thump keg? I didn't know if the vinegar would hold around in that wood and make the final product a little bit funky or not. I just want to try a wooden thumper for one reason only, and that reason is....why not? I upgraded my rig from a 5gal to a 20gal pot and I do have a wooden barrel here I could use for it. Saves me some money

I would expect a wooden thumper to soak in some flavor from hot liquids or steam, and contribute some amount of that to future runs if used this way.

I put vinegar in with my rum runs all the time. I dont get any vinegar notes coming over with the spirit. If anything, it helps get acedic acid esters, which tend to be more in the heads so they are easy to cut.

You dont think it would be any different with it being caked into the wood? I see what you're saying but those oak barrels are known for holding onto flavors. The only way Id imagine you could get it out is to completely dry the wood out which would probably wreck the barrel

An easy way to test it: soak a piece of wood in vinegar and put it in your boiler for a testrun.
The boiling point of vinegar is above those for water or ethanol.

I’d be more worried about the stinky tails that will build up in it than some vinegar .

Its a cool idea , how have you sealed the pipes in/out of the Barrel

IMO the purpose of the vinegar run is to treat and clean the metal so seems no need for wood. Why risk it at 50/50 strength.

I totally agree, vintage is for cleaning copper and metal before your sacrificial run. Would not contaminate wooden thumper with it.
Not worth the risk IMO

This^ and like yummy said those old wood stills logically would become sponges for all kinds of less desirable flavours. There are lots of historic references to wood stills but they were replaced by metal stills for a reason...integrity, maintenance, durability, sanitation..would all be issues .

Oh yeah I know its for copper. But my rig at the moment doesnt have a way to connect straight to the worm securely for a run like that. My pipe out of my boiler is 2" and my worm is 3/4

Got any pictures just for interests sake ?

Yeah it would be hard to bypass the wood but still clean the copper .
