Soapy taste in my rum

Post by Reefer1 »

Guys, there was a post a few years back regarding this problem, well i got the same problem in gallon of 18 month old rum, its been sat on american white oak for over a year, chips and staves, i just been sampling a few brews that i have maturing, as you do, and this particular demijohn has a slight soapy after taste, it didnt have it originally and some of the same batch bottled seperately is ok, has any one ever had this happen, its strange i dont use any soapy products at all, it has developed while its been maturing,
Its really odd,

It's only been on wood for a year, so I wouldn't do anything about it yet. As long as rum is still on the wood, flavors come and go and morph into other flavors. If it still smells of soap in a couple of years, then you have a problem.

I did look at that link Yummy. I couldnt see anything related to my process, no water has been added its 62 abv , dosnt smell of soap its on your palette right on the end, the rum is 15 months old with 12 months on oak.
As NZ says, i may leave it another year see what happens, if it dont go away do you think running it through carbon, i have some alcotec activated carbon.
First i will let time do its thing though.

My experience I get that with stressed yeast.

Try leaving the jar uncovered for a few days, has done the trick for me in the past.

Was it clean when you made your cuts? Mine still smells and tastes of soap. Probably going to chuck it. But it did smell that way immediately. Think I smeared it on the run.
