Definition of "bootlegger"

If I knew this, I've forgotten it.

From "Mountain spirits : a chronicle of corn whiskey from King James' Ulster plantation to America's Appalachians and the moonshine life"

The original bootlegger was the person who, in the early days of
the American colonies, and in the face of laws prohibiting it, smuggled
intoxicating spirits to the Indians in flasks concealed in the top
of his boots.
