Anybody get any good deals lately?

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I've collected too many. I only use more than one when doing tasting sessions with other distillers, and that no longer happens.
I left one in a shop last week, $1.

Criminal! I like to leave one in every room. Now I see the problem…

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
No Glencairn left behind...every time I see one at a yardsale or thirft it is coming home..
I may have more than 15 of them.. and have justified it by doing blind tastings when people want to learn a bit about scotch or rye... or my side of the family stopped by. A good cut crystal tumbler ( or water glass, coffee mug, solo cup...) is versatile, but a Glencairn really puts a dram on display.

$2 you really have to think twice if it was a good deal if the fridge doesn't work
just pulling your leg as us aussies say, that's a bargain

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Not a stellar deal but i recently got two 58L kegs for 50 CAD each. That's kind of the going rate for a keg but there isn't many around. I'd been looking for kegs to use as low wine or product storage so this was a nice find. Also My boiler is a 58L keg but I've done some welding to it that may end up being a mistake so I'm really happy to have a full sized backup.
I also picked up a car radiator (with fan and shroud) for 85 to use in my cooling water recirculation (never touches product). Again maybe not a great deal but better than i was seeing for any other radiator prices.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Today Mrs Cranky made the mistake of leaving me unsupervised so I found myself stopping at an estate sale just to see if there were any bargains I couldn't pass up.
There were a lot of tools I'd like to have but I only had $75 cash and planned on stopping at Lowe's to see if they still had the Christmas Corgi Mrs Cranky wants but isn't willing to pay $60 for. I was planning on surprising her with it if they still had any so I didn't want to use all my cash for tools so I wasn't going to buy anything but in my second pass through the back yard I found this 6.5 gallon carboy for only $10 and couldn't pass it up. And when I got to Lowe's the very last Christmas Corgi in the area rang up for $30 instead of the original $60 it was at a couple days ago

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
You guys in the US are so spoiled with those big carboys cranky, every time one is mentioned I get a pang of envy.
All we get as far as large glass vessels are 1 gal Demijohn's, that's it.
Next step up in size the only UK option is corny kegs.

6.5 gallons, man Cranky, nice find!
I need to start hitting yard sales around here, when I was a kid everyone had a couple of those big glass jugs full of "next year's vacation" coins. I had one, it was lost in the first great war, along with a lot of other stuff. In fact, now that I think about it, my first wife's grandma had (6) 3 gallon jugs she made her wine in every year. She wasn't the only little Italian grandma around here making wine, it would be cool to find one of those stashes.

I mentioned my new hobby to a friend and he said he had some equipment that he never used and didn't want anymore.
Got. 2 carboys with the metal handles! 3 hydrometers, a few graduated cylinders, bottle washer, bottle sanitizer, some bottle brushes, a really nice glass thermometer, some toasted french oak chips, activated charcoal and a small air still.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
I'm kind of surprised by that but here in the US they used to use these in water coolers. It wasn't until well into the '70's that they started transitioning to plastic bottles in water coolers so there are still tons of carboys around. This one seems to be dated 1970, although that could be a model number or something like that. I think location might be key too. There have probably been lots of people in the PNW get into and out of home brewing over the years. I'm pretty sure this one has been used as a terrarium in the past and from the mud caked on the bottom I'm also pretty sure it's been outside for quite some time. Terrariums seem to have been a popular use for these carboys at one point.
Thank you, it's always nice to score a carboy when Mrs Cranky isn't around to tell me I have enough of them

Until Sep 17th I'd never had a 6.5 gallon carboy, which is odd because I have so many in other sizes (5,6,7 even 12 gallon but never 6.5) Then back in September I found one for $3 only a few blocks from where this one was and now this one. I wonder if this particular neighborhood had a bunch of kids using them for terrariums back in the 70s and 80s and now they are getting old so they are winding up in their estates.Rusty Ole Bucket wrote: ↑Sat Dec 14, 2024 5:26 am 6.5 gallons, man Cranky, nice find!![]()

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
Well I'm not sure? But I think I may have outdone everyone here with the score I recently came across. Someone has donated everything they 've created experimented and built in the 20 years they've been in the hobby.
Everything from complete stills. Like plated columns, thumpers, reflux columns of various sizes ,extra kegs of various sizes, More than I'll ever use.various of copper pipe sizes, fittings, feurals of various sizes, there is actually more stuff than I can actually get my head around and remember what was in the truckload of stuff I got. Glass carboys. All kinds of fermentation vessels. Digital thermometer temperature probe things. I'm not even sure what all of it is and what all of it does as of yet. I probably have enough copper to build or experiment with whatever I want for the rest of my time in this hobby. The generosity of this person is like no other. I've had a lot of friends for a lot of years and nothing compares to what this man has done for me. Not only the time and money but the knowledge he has provided me with is unfathomable.
What gets me the most, I guess is the money part. He has spent money to learn the hobby for himself and simply passed it on to someone he knows Will make good use of it.
The craftsmanship of his building skills is apparent, meticulously done. Attention to detail, clean solders, and design.
And on top of all of that, he is now helping me get into the reflux end of things. Which I have no experience at. I've been pot stealing it this whole time. And like that wasn't enough, he provided me with more than enough samples of what he has made over the years to hold me over for quite some time.
I'm very anxious to get visit again and learn as much as I can as he's offering everything he knows and everything he's learned over the years.
My porn collection is quite large LOL. But I think my copper porn collection now surpasses that. LOL.
Sorry but I don't want to mention his name. If he reads this and feels he can chime in That's up to him.
I can't thank this man enough and I'm forever in his debt.
Cheers everyone

Wow, you're a very lucky guy to call this person a friend.
All of that free equipment and raw materials is of course a massive score, but to get access to his accumulation of experience and knowledge is the real win here.
And you deserve the kindness Brad, you payed some forward if you remember?
Well it's come full circle, just from another person!

I was so trying to break into the reflux world and I'm the type who hates to ask for too much assistance. So having no experience, and having read very little. It's very helpful to have someone show as well as explain what's needed.

Thanks yummy. I've gained a lot of knowledge through this forum.
I have zero hesitation when it comes to giving back. Whatever I can and to who ever I can.
This will definitely help me set up my children now who have been interested in this hobby for a while.
I guess when you look at it that way he not only helped me but my kids too.
This is also proof of the kind of people that belong to this forum.
Like you said very "helpful" to say the least.

Yes, I didn’t post it here because it was from a member whose health has kept him from continuing. I got what he said new was about $15,000 worth. Both Pot, and Reflux column (with modular sieve plates and site glasses), 26 gallon boiler, 16 gallon boiler, 20 gallon mash tun, stand with a stainless steel stirring paddle, thumper set up, gaskets, clamps, valves, fan cooling system, extra copper mesh, chemicals. Just won a drawing ar our local grocery store and for $150 I get a bottle of Thomas Handy Rye Whiskey. The bottle sells for $600. I would never spend $150 for whiskey but this one I am going to just because I have never drank alcohol that cost over $500.

Re: Anybody get any good deals lately?
This might not be as spectacular as some...or even my past ones but I went to an estate sale yesterday.
I absolutely hate this estate sale company because they don't do what's best for the people who hire them, choosing instead to cater almost exclusively to dealers and other vultures. I tried to go there an hour after they opened but after walking up a steep hill for a half mile on a super busy road with no sidewalk, the wait to get inside was at least an hour and the older I get the less I'm willing to put up with that sort of thing so I left.
At least the walk back to the car was down hill.
The sale was near the dog park so I intended to return later that day but the idiots close up at 3:00 and when I rolled up it was 2:50. People were still arriving too and getting told they only had 10 minutes, which is just idiotic from a business perspective, but they don't care.
So, Saturday I stopped at 2:00, on the way to the dog park. I was able to get a close parking space. The place was still completely packed with stuff, of course closing up before most people even get off work will leave you with a crap load of stuff, so it took almost an hour to just do a quick pass through the house. There were also a crap load of people that kept getting in the way.
The things I wanted the most were gone, but the dealers who are let in early probably snatched all that up
But behind the garage I found a couple of half gallon canning jars...really I found about a thousand canning jars but wasn't willing and didn't really have the time to dig for more. I'm guessing that late on the second day they may have been willing to do a deal but who knows, they don't really care to do what's best for their customers, so may have told me to come back Sunday, when they were open from 9 to noon, but I had to work and am currently getting rid of a bunch of jars.
Next to the jars was a cool old apothecary bottle with a stopper that was sun purpled, which usually means pre 1920's. Looking at the bottom of the bottle it had a patent date of 1894, so it's likely between 1894 and 1910 So, I took something Mrs Cranky asked me to buy plus the 2 jars and bottle up to the table where the cash drawer was and waited my turn. The guy cashing out the dealer ahead of me and I had a conversation while he was taking care of her about how busy they have been. I told him their hours were stupid and he didn't disagree.
When he was finished he left
leaving me just standing there but fairly quickly a lady took his place and made me wait while she got herself situated and poured a coke into her cup and did some other things before even talking to me, then finally asked if I was ready.
I showed her the bottle and jars and told her "these were behind the garage and I have no idea how much they are."
She looked at me for several seconds trying to size me up, then called someone else over and asked how old he thought the label on the bottle was...that was all part of trying to size me up to try to figure out what I would be willing to pay.
He said "Looks like 50's to me", and she finally made her decision about me. I have to admit she sized me up perfectly, which is hard to do, and said "How does $3 sound?" I said that was fine. She didn't even give me a price on the jars but they were $1 each, which isn't spectacular but was ok, especially since I don't see many narrow mouthed half gallons. There are actually a lot of these jars on the market, I haven't yet determined the manufacturer but the labels are very similar on most of them and they sell for anywhere between $40 and $100 which isn't a bad deal.
