GYPSUM - Help - What is it

GYPSUM,

I read in a lot of recipes that use an amount of Gypsum

This surely can't be Garden Store Variety Gypsum that is added to clay soil to help break it down a bit ??, surely
Or am I wrong and this is exactly what is being used ??
