herbal tinctures

Post by blenderbender »

I've been using an air Still for a few years now mostly to produce a cheap source of high ABV spirits to tincture the herbs, though I have been known to use a bit to attain altered states. I'm familiar with most of the terminology regarding the distillation process but beyond running a sugar wash to get a 70-80% ABV spirit, I generally just discard the initial 25ml and pay little attention to heads, hearts, tails, etc. For the most part the herbs that I might use are far less tasty and overpower whatever less than favorable qualities the spirits might hang on to. But even for that when I do have a taste I don't find it objectionable at all. Obviously I'm not a connoisseur of distilled spirits. I was just wondering if there's anything wrong with this perspective or is there anything I might consider doing differently.
