Distilling Whiskey - Once and Done or Stripping/ Spirit Run ?

Post by Turbo6ta »

I have what I guess you would call a 'hybrid' still ... Basically a short vertical column with a reflux (dephlegmator) condenser in it along with a shotgun (product) condenser on the end.

If I only supply cooling water to the shotgun product condenser, I guess you would call it just a basic 'pot still' ... If I supply cooling water to both the reflux (dephlegmator) condenser and the shotgun product condenser, I guess it would then be a hybrid still (maybe I'm wrong in my terminology)

Anyway, just a bunch of various names that just make everything confusing.

My question is: I am getting ready to distill some corn / sugar wash (off the grain method) that is now fermenting ... I could just supply cooling water to the shotgun (product) condenser and do both a stripping and a spirit run or supply cooling water to both the reflux (dephlegmator) condenser and the shotgun (product) condenser and do a slow 'once and done'.

Which method do you think will produce the best product, or is it a toss-up ?

Thanks ...
