Vinegar and sacrificial run done through my dream still

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Vinegar and sacrificial run done through my dream still

Post by N00b »

Just ran vinegar and a sacrificial run through my new Oak Stills 13 gallon jacketed still.

It’s awesome. Heats up fast on 2x2kw elements, runs great, and all around a massive upgrade from my stovetop 4 gallon alembic I’ve been using for that past few years.

The last thing I need is a large container for cooling water and I’m off to the races. I have two 12ish gallons of pure oatmeal ready to go.

Got this thing for my birthday just now and I think I’m in love. I think I need to give her a name.

That’s a very nice copper pot still. Them potbelly boilers look extremely good. If I didn’t run gas I would buy one also.
Now your still is clean as a whistle you can put it into Commission and make some good spirits.

+1 Me too. Looks beautiful. Sitting here drooling.

Martha is a fine name. My grand-mother was Marta and she would probably object if I used that name, being a teetotaller, but this is your still. My stills are called Unni and Natalia, after my oldest and youngest.
Ongoing projects: Green Diamond Wheated Bourbon v5; and time for summer cleaning of the distillery.

Awesome names. My two are young, still living at home, and would think it’s weird if I reused their names. That said, Martha it is.

I’m not usually one to name things. The only other object I can think of was a 30 year old little truck I used to have with just over 300k miles on it.

But Martha has too much personality.

On it. Whiskey first, then “tequila” and then we’ll see. Oh and I gave a bunch of plum-and-sugar wash hanging out from a couple of years ago (that I forgot about).

Martha’s got work to do.

Just stripped some oat whiskey, 12ish gallons in 3.5 hours. Not bad at all.

Hey there N00b,

Are you running that beauty on 120V? Oak Stills sells that still with either 2x2Kw @110V or 2x3Kw @220V. Which did you get, if I may ask?
If you got the 2x3Kw @220V, what size breaker(s) are you using. Sorry for all the questions, but that gorgeous still has me interested in a big way!

110. I have two separate 20 amp breakers feeding each element.

Wow. You were able to strip 12 gallons in 3.5 hours on two 110 volt circuits! I am impressed.

Took 1 hour to get to temp, then went right through it. The limiting factor for the first half of the actual run was steam pressure in the jacket - I had to turn the elements down some.

1st time I distilled anything which was water to test things out I did it in My bathroom using a bathtub full of cold water.
No way, You can get away with that with a family. :lolno:

Me too. When I was distilling in my two room apartment back in the early 90'ies I could barely fit the still in the bathroom. Don't think it would have worked with my current cohabitants today. :)
