Lid hatches for boilers - what type is best?

In our view 30 gallons and under is considered hobby size. Do not bring anything larger than this to our site.

Lid hatches for boilers - what type is best?

Post by PalCabral »

Hiya distillers.

I am looking to increase the stripping size for next year and I am zooming in on just a typical large sized kettle, with a wide neck and a lid. There seems to be two types of systems to keep the lid tight for distillation, and if I am using the incorrect words in English here, please feel free to correct me. I'm not entirely sure what to call these things in my own tongue.

One is the classic hatch type, with a latch to keep the lid tight. The hatch is welded to the side of the boiler and the latch bends over the lid and squeezes it in place.

The other, less common, is some sort of screw hatch, which goes along the brim of the lid, and when you tighten it or latch it, it tightens the the lid over the edge of the boiler rim. I am really uncertain how to express this in English, sorry. Picture below, I am sure this system has an English name but I'm not finding it searching or using translate services.

The question is simple though, which one of these two systems is the best to keep the lid firmly shut? Should I avoid anyone of them. The second type give me the impression it is more fail prone, but I might be all wrong.

Look forward to you experienced and wise opinions.
