New HD Equation Calculator
Just implemented a native wiki extension for real-time equations/calculations tailored toward brewing and distilling.
Try it and let me know what you think. Looking for suggested additions.
Also, this is a work-in-progress so if it breaks or changes, just roll with it for a while.

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
Look real good, UJ! Maybe a good addition would be a dilution calculator where the goal is to know how much spirits of a specific ABV and how much water it takes to dilute to a specific volume and s specific ABV.
Ongoing projects: Yellow Diamond Oated Bourbon v2; A Neutral spirit based on whiskey feints.

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
I explained it really poorly, or I am missing it, UJ.
The dilution calc in the current version calculates how much water to use to dilute to a target ABV. However, many times you want to dilute down to fill a bottle or a jar, so you're aiming for a target volume with a target ABV. How much high proof spirit at a specific ABV and how much water do I need to mix to get a target ML and target ABV?

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
Great tool
Might I suggest and alternative view?
Something like this
Volume of the fermentor × last 2 numbers of desired specific gravity × to percentage of the grain you want ÷ grain points
Common grain/gravity points:
Corn 35
Wheat 35
Barley 35
Oats 35
Rye 27
Example:
10g (fermentor) × 75 (gravity points) × .6 (percentage of grain in bill) = 450
450 ÷ 35 (grain points) = 12.8lbs of grain
So that way when you say i want a starting sg of 1.075 and have this much volume, and want x percent of these grains, these are the weights I need to achieve this mash bill
Might I suggest and alternative view?

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
What about a bottling calculator with units option .
Stock ABV ( or Proof)
Desired ABV ( or Proof)
Bottle size ( Liters , Quarts or Gal)
Add this much water .( Litres , Quarts or Gal)

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
Not quite what I was thinking , but that is actually better .
OK so , if I got to fill. 700ml bottle , I just need to tweak stock volume until I get close .
But it also means if I find say 500mls of 75% on the shelf , I can dilute id down to what ever with the same calculator ….nice .
I’ll be using this from now on .
And thanks for the units .
My recommended goto .

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
OK I changed the logic so it's more useful for bottling/aging/storage.
Two modes, proof down existing stock or fill containers.
Here's an example of one.

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
Hi Uncle Jesse. It’s looking good. Thanks for making that.
There is an issue with one of the calculators. The proofing down calculator still has the same bug in it that Rad’s has (The one I have used for years). It may be good to add a note to it so people can adjust accordingly.
The issue is that the calculator is going by volume, when it should be by molar weight to be accurate. Because alcohol is lighter for the same volume, using the existing formula will result in a higher proof than desired (What you entered for the desired target). For example: If you want to proof down a 64% ABV spirits to 40% ABV and use that calc, the resulting spirits will end up around 42%.
I’m no chemistry expert, but have proven that out many times. Someone once explained to me the complexities of trying to make a molar weight calc that allowed us to use volumes. I think they said a calc using volume adjusted for molar weight would only work if you were using the same molar weight each time, which can vary by product (I think that includes spirits with added sugar in them, etc.). This part is over my head, but I can confirm through much practice that the calc here is off.
I deal with this by either proofing twice, and that gets me really close on the second proofing, or if I’m doing my standard barrel strength ABV to 40%, I target 38% ABV and hit close to 40%.

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
Well, you are right and you're wrong Otis. You're wrong, it isn't a molar weight value, but you're absolutely right in that ethanol is very anhydrous and does not mix equally with water. This is why the azeotrope max proof for drinkable ethanol is 192 proof. It is so anhydrous that even if your still is 100% efficient, it will suck moisture out of the air to settle at 192 proof.OtisT wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2026 5:25 pm Hi Uncle Jesse. It’s looking good. Having said that, I do not want to integrate the TTB tables at this time - which would give me accuracy. Instead, A note has been inserted into the calculator, so thanks for reminding me of that.
Also, the calculator now not only tells you the volume of water you need to add, but also the weight, which for me is always the easiest and most accurate way to determine a volume of water.

Re: New HD Equation Calculator
OK folks, because Otis brought it up, the calculator now uses published TTB data and is accurate to 1/10th of a U.S. proof point.OtisT wrote: ↑Sun Jun 14, 2026 5:25 pm Hi Uncle Jesse. It’s looking good. Thanks for making that.

It will now give you the old, not-so-accurate, linear formula value, and actual TTB derived values for water to add and water weight to add.
