converting sugar to starch
i need some help on converting starch. i cant really get ahold of grains freshly harvested and the only kind of starch that i have is wheat germ, corn, cornmeal, cornstarch, potatoes, and corn. all of them are store bought and i was wondering if someone could tell me how to convert them to sugar. i know a little on converting it with enzymes but would any of the ^these^ have enzymes in them still since they have been canned and stuff??? but if they do or they dont have enzymes could someone give me some steps on converting them???

Have you read the site to wich this forum belongs ??
There is a whole section on making a wash, not only with sugar or fruit but also a quite extensive part on grains. I'm almost sure that everything you need to know to get started can be found there.
Second thing to do is to look up some posts of theholymackerel; he is one of the experts on grains around here.

Cornflakes cereal has malt in it. It takes about 10lbs of cereal per 5 gallon wash.
Cook the cereal on the stove with hot water the same way you would cook grains. Add about a 5 lb bag of sugar for a 5 gallon mash, let it cool down, add yeast, nutrients, and adjust the ph. you should be able to get about 12% abv out of the mash.forgot user name wrote:what all do i do with the cornflakes? just put in water and wait till it converts?

hahahahaha!
I personally would not add sugar.
I'd be perfectly happy with the 6%.
I'm not a big beliver in adding sugar to fruit or grain mash to raise the abv. To my way of thinking you might just as well distill the 6% and then add an equal measure of sugar vodka to your final product ... you'll end up with very nearly the same thing... more volume, less flavor.

yes i have read alot. i know alot about distilling and i got about 10% of the info from this site and the rest was from my own experience. if on the main page there were simple steps to malting i wouldnt be asking these questions. for example i used to ride BMX(bike) and i could do an ice pick and 360 misty flip. for those of you who dont ride BMX are most likly are very confused when you see stuff like that but those of you who do ride understand it very clearly. and its like that with malting for me. its alot harder to understand then it could be on this site. so thats why i come to this forum to ask easy questions and if i dont understand something i say that i dont understand and i easyily find out what i didnt understand and get alot better results. making an entire website on facts for distilling has got to be harder then it seems and thats why it might not be clear to amature distillers.

What you are describing is largely seen on this forum as the "Don't make me read a whole lot of stuff, just tell me the answer" approach to learning.
People mostly don't respond very well to that.
I do empathize however with the feeling of needing a tiny clue out of a great intimidating mass of seemingly nonapplicable info and whishing someone would just give you the clue. (this feeling is common among folks with mild attention disorders)
This isn't really the case here though.
you need *all* the info.
going into distilling half baked is a good way to get yourself dead.
Do yourself a favor... score a handfull of ritilin if you need it to concentrate and plunk yourself down and read the site.
in the mean time to satisfy your feeling of needing a clue have a look at this web page that explains how malting works pretty clearly : http://www.realbeer.com/jjpalmer/ch14.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

fourway everyone asks questions. im sure you were no better then me when you first started up in distilling and just like now im sure there was people like you to make it harder for people like me to understand shit. it must feel good to feel big knowing that you can say what ever you want to who ever you want over the internet no matter how big or small you really are. i really dont care what you have to say because i know that really you are a little little defendless person that has a wonderful thing in his life a computer that can let him feel big and not have to take shit from anyone anymore because size doesnt matter over the internet. theres very few people on this site like you because your one of the few that was always a small harmless kid growing up. so dont take the internet for granted little guy

Listen.... you're going to need to dial down the invective a little bit... especially if you're the guy who called leftlanecruiser an ass before.Anonymous wrote:fourway everyone asks questions. im sure you were no better then me when you first started up in distilling and just like now im sure there was people like you to make it harder for people like me to understand shit. it must feel good to feel big knowing that you can say what ever you want to who ever you want over the internet no matter how big or small you really are. i really dont care what you have to say because i know that really you are a little little defendless person that has a wonderful thing in his life a computer that can let him feel big and not have to take shit from anyone anymore because size doesnt matter over the internet. theres very few people on this site like you because your one of the few that was always a small harmless kid growing up. so dont take the internet for granted little guy
You can call me anything you like... I can take it... and besides no matter what you think of to call me I can just about guarantee you that I'm much much worse.
Hell... for me the stuff you said above is practically glowing praise.
As long as it isn't completely offensive to others or something that would be banned as hate speech in the EU I'll let anything you want to say about me stand and I'll even thank you just to let you know that I appreciate your thoughtfullnes in going out of your way to inform me of my shortcomings...
its only with the help of brave souls like yourself who arent afraid to speak out that I can ever hope to improve...
but if you start going after other members of this forum the way you are going after me I'll edit or delete your posts without hesitation... and if it persists I have no doubt at all that Uncle Jesse will just ban you (it's his way).
so please... welcome to the forum, have fun... I hope you'll get a usename so we can distinguish you from the next short tempered guest user who comes along... perhaps in the fullness of time you'll become an avid daily user of this forum with a wealth of information to share and you'll have a chance to show us the right way to answer problematic newbie questions.

i never had a problem with you fourway you could of been the coolest person i know but it didnt go that way. i asked a question and if you look back in the earlyer post that only TWO people gave me good helpful info and the rest was from people like leftlane trying to look good by making me look bad and saying dumb stuff. i would never say something to someone else if they didnt start with me first. everyone might be looking at me as the bad person but why dont you look at why i said leftlane is an ASS. he could of said nothing and i would NOT have a problem with him. and feel free to ban me from this site..... ill be back.

This is a distillers board. There are other boards out there for teary, misguided people to cry out their frustration at a harsh world. Use 'em.
Leave this board for the dissuscussion of distillin'.
Don't you recognise the whine?
its our old friend who jesse banned from the old board snuck back in.
he's gone again.
